What does "patent pending" mean?

It is a great deterrent, used by a manufacturer or seller, to inform competitors that a patent application is on file at the U.S. Patent Office. Rather than run the risk of "buying a lawsuit" when your patent issues, a would-be copier will probably steal someone else's product - one that does not have a "patent pending" designation on it.
