What subject matter can be patented?

A U.S. patent may be granted to the inventor or discoverer of any new, useful, and unobvious process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof; or for any distinct and new variety of asexually reproduced plants; or for any new, original and ornamental design of a manufactured article.
