New Patent Reform Act

Congress recently overhauled the Patent Laws by passing the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act ("AIA"). The greatest change under the AIA starts in March 2013.

New software products take a lot of time and money to develop and market. Accordingly, it is important to discourage competitors from selling similar products, and software pirates from selling “knock-off” copies.

Is it costly to file for foreign trademark registrations?

The answer was yes, until recently. Separate trademark applications had to be filed in each foreign country in which a manufacturer or retailer wanted to prevent someone from using its brand. Now a single, relatively inexpensive, International Application can be filed under the "Madrid Protocol" to cover over 75 countries.
